Tips on Moving
Introduction to Moving
When you make a decision to move to a new home, there must be thousands of questions you want answered. Whether this will be your first or fifth time moving, the following information will help make it a less stressful experience.
When is the best time for me to move?
When possible, you should plan your move to take place at a time convenient for you and your family. If, however, you are moving out of a home that has been sold, the date by which you must vacate that home will be defined in your sales contract. Due to the seasonal nature of the moving industry, you should remember that during certain periods, it will be harder to find a good mover and the prices may be higher. These periods include:
- The summer months: for many families with children, summer is the most convenient time to move because the school term is up. In addition, summer weather is usually more suitable for moving.
- The beginning and end of each month: the first and last days of each month, regardless of the season, are very busy days for the moving industry.
- Weekends and Holidays.
How am I going to move?
Should I hire a moving company or do it myself? There are three general ways
to move:
- Hire a full service moving company - most companies allow you to either pack and unpack your belongings yourself or have the company do the work.
- Rent a truck and do everything yourself.
- Some companies will rent you a truck and driver but you have to do the packing and unpacking.
Whichever option you choose, be sure to reserve the moving services or truck well in advance to get your choice of dates.
Estimating the cost of using a moving company.
No doubt about it. It costs money to move. Just how much it will cost is based on a number of factors such as:
- the weight of goods to be moved. Local moves maybe charged based on labour time but long distance m
oves are usually charged by weight and distance - extra heavy items such as a piano
- long walk from the truck to the house
- the fuel surcharge
- the disassembly or reassembly of furniture
- moving insurance
- the distance to the new residence
- the time of year
- whether or not the company will do the packing and unpacking
Other costs
Other costs that need to be taken into consideration might include:
- the cost of staying in a hotel while traveling to your new home
- the cost of staying in a hotel if you cannot get into your new home immediately
- storage: if you don't have the space to have all your possessions delivered at once, you may have to put some in storage
